Traveling Through Time With Mayor James, And Rethinking The U.S. Presidency

National Archives and Records Administration
According to historian Jeremi Suri, Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the U.S. presidency into what it is today, moving away from the concept of the elder statesman proposed by Thomas Jefferson.

Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James is a pretty colorful character, but did you know he wears a magical bow tie that lets him travel through time? Today, the authors of a new children's book tell how they chose the mayor and his neckwear to recount Kansas City's history. Then, a look at The Impossible Presidency.  The role of chief executive has changed so much from the founding fathers' vision, one historian says it has become "too big for its own good."

Aja James and Audrey Masoner will launch 'Mayor Sly and the Magic Bow Tie' at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 11.  For more information, visit KCLibrary.org.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
